Soviet and American Objectives in Eastern Europe.

 

Stalin wanted to:

--Preserve the Great Alliance after the war.

--Create a buffer zone from Germany.

--Create a better view of the USSR in the west.

--In Eastern Europe he worked to install governments friendly to the USSR, create the buffer zone, and exploit the economies of the USSR.

The Allies hoped to:

--Enable European countries to elect any government they chose.

--Open Eastern European countries to free trade.

Soviet Agression:
Poland:  The Germans and the USSR agreed that they would allow the USSR to control an eastern part of Poland during the war.  When Stalin took control of this chunk of land the Russians massacred 10,000 Polish Military officers in the Katyn Forest.  Only in 1991 did Moscow admit it had committed this crime.
