Years and Lifetimes

Years and lifetimes ago,
Still faintly remembered,
Clumps of boys and of girls
Chased each other, laughing,
Shrieking, around a field.
Years flew by on the wind
And still the game went on.

One girl forgot the rules,
Dropped back time and again.
Once, she spent a few years
Standing on the sidelines,
Where she wept bitterly.
Years dragged on, cold and bare,
And still the game went on.

She found another field,
Another clump found her,
And for a few years, she ran,
Ahead, behind, but mainly,
With. And she learned some rules.
Years passed, now fast, now slow,
And still the game went on.

Earth tilted, the game changed.
She chases after her clump.
Sometimes they wait. Some clumps,
She thinks, are chasing her,
Or else she's chasing them.
Years whirl around a lost girl
And still the game goes on.
